I was surprised to hear today of the death of Simpsons actress, Marcia Wallace, who died of cancer today aged 70.
As a longtime fan of the Simpsons, I think that she as an actress will be greatly missed by fans. Edna always had the most amusing storylines (who can forget the on/off affair Edna and Seymour enjoyed, or when Edna wrote to a handsome man not realizing it was Bart?) and had a wry, exhausted humour. The character also gave a generation of kids the chance to understand their teachers, possibly for the first time ever.
For obvious reasons the character will be leaving the cartoon; ‘retired’ perhaps, because no matter how good the replacement actor, nobody could replace that voice talent which defined the cartoon as much as Yeardley Smith et al.
Nobody could say that Marcia didn’t fight the battle bravely. Before now, she battled it on/off ever since 1985. A brave courageous woman.
HOMER: Wait, Bart’s teacher is named Krabappel? I’ve been calling her Crandall. Why didn’t someone tell me? I’ve been making an idiot out of myself.
