This is the 2013 movie starring Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Leo di Caprio, based on the famous F Scott Fitzgerald novel.
This film is directed by Baz Luhrmann and is the story of Gatsby, this wealthy man who throws lavish parties and rumours permeate about him. I wasn’t a big fan of Tobey Maguire as Nick Caraway. I am so used to seeing him in his Spiderman persona I almost expected him to rip off his shirt and be wearing his Spiderman suit underneath. ha ha.
The cinematography of the film is so bright, and almost disorienting. The modern soundtrack adds a pulse to the story, and even though it started slowly the speed of the story soon picked up. I have never seen any other versions of this film so I have no basis for comparison. Leo di Caprio as Gatsby was good, although his accent kept on sliding around. I don’t know if this was deliberate or not.
There was a somewhat heavy dependence on CGI at times, however at the end the flashback sequence was very well done. Similarly, it was rather sad at the end when nobody turned up at Gatsby’s funeral except for Nick.
MY RATING: 4 /5.
