I originally wasn’t keen on this film to begin with. The premise seemed shaky and the story a bit weak, but I saw it on sale in HMV a few days ago and I thought it would be a bargain (I brought Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs too, yay! Review for that coming soon.) So. Yeah.
This certainly has an interesting melee of actors. Hugh Grant, Brian Blessed, Martin Freeman and David Tennant to name a few. There were plenty of witty moments in its 88 minute run time. Iconic characters from the 19th century get a look in – Charles Darwin, Jane Austen, The Elephant Man, et al. The movie is childish and is done in claymation which is OK I suppose.
That being said, as the movie progressed I was chuckling readily. Charles Darwin’s trained monkey was an asset, and all the pirate characters brought something to the story. Sometimes people as film audiences have to learn just to let go of their high-strung beliefs and sit back to enjoy the cinematic journey. It’s almost like the proverbial dinner party full of famous faces from the 19th century, littered with pirates just to add interest. Oh, and a dodo and a monkey too, just to make things that bit more interesting.
A fantastic film which was saved from falling flat by the all-star cast and witty script, this will definitely go on my Top 10 Films list of 2013 / 2014.
MY RATING: 4.5 / 5.
