The 1950s was rich with its fair share of sci-fi movies and television shows. With the threat of invasion hanging over their heads, there were plenty of films about extraterrestrial visitors. This one is passably good, one of the better ones to be sure.
Of course, like any film, it has its faults. The script is a bit shaky and weak at times and at others the acting is poor. Nevertheless, there are some good moments within the film itself. It reminds me of the television series, the Twilight Zone, which was done around the same time and contained similar themes.
However, the true horror of this movie lies in the underlying threat and paranoia. The complacency of a small town as Kevin McCarthy’s Miles Bennall hysterically tries to warn them of the approaching invasion of pod people is unsurpassable by cinema today.
A good film if you can forgive its obvious flaws.
