Fifty Shades of Grey (2015).

Fifty Shades of GreyThe Daily Mail were practically dribbling over this movie when it came out. Starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

To say that this movie was heavily advertized is a bit of an understatement. For a long time dribbling publicity of the movie wrote highly of it. Its key demographic seemed to be sexually frustrated middle aged mothers, who are probably a bit bored of the baby sick and the farting husband and want to escape to a world of their fantasies. I mean, someone must’ve brought some of the copies which made EL James so rich?

This film was just mediocre. The only saving grace was its soundtrack and that was only passable. There were moments of unintentional comedy in the film too, but you can’t really sell the idea of the film being mainly a comedy especially when it covers issues of power and dominance.

The movie over all was quite uninteresting. The cinematography probably tried to be arty and creative with plenty of high shots and arty lighting. Most of all, though, both film and book glorify domestic violence and were apparently badly representing the BDSM community. I don’t know if this is true or not – I don’t have any interest in that sort of stuff.

I have respect for fanfiction and its force for good but this film shows that perhaps fanfiction should remain online where it belongs.

MY RATING: * / *****
