Inglorious Basterds (2009).

inglourious-basterds-hickox-hammersmarkA Tarentino masterwork about a group of ‘basterds’ who plan to assassinate Nazi leaders. Starring Michael Fassbender, Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt.

I felt a bit guilty for liking this film – it has quite a lot of violence in it but with that comes a big dollop of irreverence in regards to the subject they are dealing with. It is also quite long – about 2 and a half hours. If you don’t like sitting through long films then watch it in two chunks.

And then there is Hans Lander. Christoph Waltz deserves his own mention here. strudel-550x366
My sister Izzie (she blogs at https://ibirch99.wordpress.com/) adores Waltz’s American films and I can see why she admires him as an actor. He has such an arresting power over his scenes and is captivating, even when playing the role of a villain. Watching him embody the evilness of a ‘Jew Hunter’ was enthralling and it made me want to keep watching to see what would happen next.
Brad Pitt was good as Aldo Raine. Very charismatic!

A super film which had a heavy dollop of violence, but was nonetheless a very good film if you don’t mind historic irreverence.

MY RATING: **** / *****
