A dark, gritty film about divided loyalties during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). The directorial debut of Angelina Jolie.
This movie received quite a lot of negative publicity due to its very pervading themes and atrocities towards women. Indeed the film seeks to drag you down to its depths and drown you with its feeling of fear, oppression and violence.
This is not the sort of film to watch as a casual viewer because it is so dark and so horrible. Good performances from all, and it makes you feel the same feeling of alienation and fear experienced by the women as the Bosnian soldiers mercilessly commit genocide.
There were some moments which I had to watch through my fingers because the scenes were so scary and unsettling. I don’t want to give it a 5* rating because it covers such a bleak subject. I’m not saying that I like films where people are hurt, especially women, men and children…but setting it against the backdrop of a world where the atrocities of the war are reported on and people continue to exist nearby with no concerns besides themselves is a scenario all too real where pockets of conflict continue to exist.
I’m not going to watch this film again anytime soon but its very brave of Jolie to direct such a film.
MY RATING: ** / *****
