Crank (2006)

A crazy movie about a man, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) who, after being poisoned, must keep his adrenaline going in order to stay alive.

This film was an interesting one. Not that it revealed anything particularly fantastic, but rather because it seemed to be dashing from one scenario to the next with little thought for character development. So much of the character motivation was very poorly thought out. If poorly mapped characters and needless nudity are your thing, then maybe this is the film for you.

Yes, it is entertaining. But intelligent? Hell, no. Then again, its not the sort of film to watch if you want to keep your brain fed and watered for the entire 90 minute duration of the film. That being said, it seems to massively reference the Grand Theft Auto games which is interesting from a filmic perspective. A good film if action films are your thing.

Also, seeing as this film was made about 10 years ago, its interesting from the quasi-nostalgia point of view. Of course, some elements of the film haven’t aged well but its all a load of fun nonetheless.

I would never ordinarily watch this sort of film (another university film screening unfortunately) but it has at least tempted me to tentatively explore the genre. Of course, I won’t adore it. Its quite fun, and the while the freehand camerawork was rather disorientating to begin with it was easy to get used to it.

MY RATING: **.5 / *****
