Call the Midwife Series 5 Christmas Special (2016)

At the time of writing this review, it is 28th December 2016. This Christmas special takes the action away from Nonnatus House and places it in a clinic, The Hope Clinic, in South Africa. The episode also saw the sparkling addition of Sinead Cusack as the clinic doctor.

It’s been a while since the show has been on and of course there is always the risk of my personal opinion of the show being delineated with the passing of time. However, while I questioned the everpresent overtones of Vanessa Redgrave’s voiceover (what is the point – Jenny Lee’s character was written out of the story ages ago?) but nonetheless, it was also great to see the locality swap.

This was a feature length episode and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when watching it. It was nice to see Cusack in her role, because she is one of my favourite actresses and brings something new to every role she plays. The story was emotional, but of course as often happens with the newer episodes they have to be tempered with positivity, and this was done well.

Over all, a very enjoyable episode. Incredibly sugary sweet and melodramatic, but still highly watchable.

MY RATING: **** / *****
