Writer J.M Barrie develops a very special friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family, inspiring him to write the story of Peter Pan.
The story of Peter Pan has always been in my peripheral vision ever since I was little. I didn’t watch the film until February this year, however.
This film is perfect if you want 100 minutes of escapism. Johnny Depp is brilliant as Barrie, while Kate Winslet sparkles as Sylvia, the mother of the Llewelyn Davies boys. The film itself is so lovely and endearing, and I can’t believe that it flew under my radar until now.
It is brilliant to have a film which does not have a weak romantic plot as its main focus. This film has so many overarching themes, however. It’s about growing up. It’s about family, and imagination. The sentimentality in the film did not drown it, and I found myself unexpectedly moved by the end of the film. You too might find yourself emotionally moved, unless you have a heart of stone. Conversely, it also manages to have moments of humour at the same time, which isn’t so extreme as to be unbearable.
The perfect film for all ages. Highly recommended.
