Sex, Drugs & Murder: Life in the Red Light Zone (2016)

Six part documentary about a group of prostitutes working in a legalized red light district in Leeds.

To be honest, this is not the sort of thing I naturally gravitate towards. However, documentary series are always interesting.

People’s attitudes towards prostitution are always worth exploring, however in this series the cameras do not judge the women as they do what they need to do to survive, if survival is structured around their drug addictions. They are presented as human beings, with hopes and fears just like everyone else but scarred by violent and traumatic childhoods and damaging romantic relationships.

Ultimately, I’m not too sure what to think of this documentary series. It’s certainly eye-opening. It is certainly one of those problematic issues which doesn’t have such a clear cut answer.

MY RATING: ***.5 / *****
