A Pakistani native (Riz Ahmed) discovers that his American Dream has crumbled in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
This was another BBCi Player find. Personally, I find thrillers to be a bit so-so and as such I don’t think I would have watched this under my own steam. I think its also one of those films within the thriller genre where you need to have contextually read the accompanying book.
However, I don’t want to use this review to spill poisonous words on this film at all, by any means. It is a very taut thriller and does its job well. However, the message it was trying to portray felt a bit shambled together which weakens the over all effect of the film itself.
Riz Ahmed was rather good in the main role, but without knowing the style of the book to which it has been adapted I can’t say that with any certainty. However, while it is weak in places it puts across its core message well. Cultural uncertainty and societal tension was certainly pushed into overdrive in the wake of the September 11th attacks.
MY RATING: **.5 / *****
