Versailles Series 2 recently finished airing on BBC1. This blogpost is about my thoughts pertaining to the series.
While the finale to the previous series was full of shocks, this one was less so although it still managed to be a pretty decent series throughout. Relationships between characters were memorable, especially between Louis and his brother Phillipe.
The episodes of this series were all interesting, not letting the darker elements of the series overwhelm what is a decent drama, and neither does it let itself be completely defined by its sexual or violent extremes. George Blagden is a good actor as always, so it was brilliant to see the highs and lows of his character.
The cinematography and costumes are all amazing, with a colourful variety of characters who are defined by more than who they are and each bring something to their roles, so much so that I felt bereft when one character died. If that doesn’t show personal attachment to a show I don’t know what does.
It is an epic period piece and I can’t wait until series 3 is released.
MY RATING: **** / *****
