Trainspotting (1996).

Trainspotting is probably what a drug addict’s wet dream looks like.

So I finally bit the proverbial bullet and sat down to watch Trainspotting. It certainly doesn’t conform to what you’d expect when watching a film. Narrated by Renton (Ewan McGregor, in a role which probably defined his international breakthrough into film.) this movie is about a group of heroin addicts in 1980s Edinburgh. It follows them as they stumble through life – having sex and taking as many drugs as possible.

It’s quite a brash, vulgar film too. It doesn’t pull any punches. Boyle drags you right down into the murky little world in which Renton and his friends exist in.
It is darkly funny, bitter and tragic. Boyle does not have an objective in portraying these characters. He simply portrays them, and that’s just fine. He just shows these characters unapologetically. If you feel you could be easily offended by stellar film making then give this a miss.
